Co-design of actions against extreme heat in school environments
The CCAN team, in collaboration with the Puerto Rico Department of Education and its Secretary, Dr. Yanira Raices Vega, organized an important meeting to discuss recommendations to prepare public schools for this year’s heat season. The meeting occurred at the University of Puerto Rico Graduate School of Public Health.
Present at the event were also other members of the department’s staff, Pablo Mendez-Lazaro (our Lead PI), Ada Monzon (Meteorologist and President of the Board of Directors of the EcoExploratorio Museum of Science), and the director of the National Weather Service San Juan Office, Ernesto Rodríguez.
The group discussed initiatives underway to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on learning environments. Additional actions to reinforce the efforts already implemented by the Department of Education were also addressed.
This discussion, jointly organized by CCAN and the Department of Education, demonstrates a commitment to the health and well-being of students, school staff, and communities during this unprecedented heat season. Staying prepared and informed is key to addressing climate challenges.
